Welcome to the Virginia Department of Business Assistance and our portfolio of services. For most Virginians, jobs and opportunity means launching a new business venture or expanding the workforce of an existing business. Small business, comprising 97% plus of all Virginia businesses, remains at the heart of the growth, vitality and diversity of Virginia’s economy. Unfortunately, this recession has brought high unemployment, lower profits and a tight credit market to many businesses and their communities throughout the Commonwealth. As the Agency Director of the Department of Business Assistance, I am taking an integrated approach with my professional staff to deliver services that meet the needs of today’s business environment. This means working closely with regional economic development offices, Chambers of Commerce, National Federation of Independent Businesses and Small Business Development Centers statewide on priority issues concerning workforce requirements, business trends, and access to capital. I will also work with existing businesses seeking incentives from the Governor’s Opportunity Fund, Virginia Jobs Investment Program, and the Virginia Small Business Financing Authority.
Peter Su joined Governor Bob McDonnell’s Economic Development and Job Creation Team as the Agency Director of the Virginia Department of Business Assistance (VDBA) in April, 2010. VDBA is the agency in charge of the Virginia Jobs Investment Program, Virginia Small Business Financing Authority, and Virginia Business-One-Stop information service. Additionally, Director Su serves as an Assistant Secretary at the Virginia Department Commerce & Trade, focusing on international trade & investment. In this capacity, he works to bring in international companies to Virginia to create new jobs.
Mr. Su was Deputy Director of Coalitions on Governor McDonnell’s campaign and later served on the Energy Subcommittee of Governor McDonnell’s transition team.
Mr. Su has more than a decade of public and private sector experience in business development, international trade, legislative affairs, and information technology. He most recently supported law enforcement efforts as a contractor at the US Department of Justice and has worked on projects for the US Army. He also managed global business affairs at Afton Chemical and was actively involved with small business, and minority owned enterprises in Northern Virginia.
Mr. Su has experience in both the Executive and Legislative branches of government. He worked in the Pentagon as a Country Director in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, at the U.S. Department of State as a Senior Foreign Affairs Officer, and the U.S. Treasury Department. On Capitol Hill, he was a State Department Foreign Policy Advisor to the Congressional U.S.-China Working Group, the U.S.-China Interparliamentary Exchange, and the House Small Business Committee.
He holds a Master of Science Degree in Computer Science from the University of York in England, and a Bachelor’s Degree from Purdue University.
